Title: Sunset City
Size: Medium: Painting Completion: November 2021 Exhibition Text For my 4th project, I painted a sunset landscape of a city. The piece shows a dark blue, red, orange and yellow sky blended together. A few buildings painted in black and below that is a reflection of it all in the water. This painting I made was inspired by Impressions sunrise" painting by Johannes Vermeer. The focus on the painting is the buildings |
Claude Monet
The inspiration I chose for my project is Claude Monet, a French painter born in November 1840 in Paris, France. He is best known for his impressionists paintings. Though his best impressionists painting is the, "impressions sunrise." I chose Monet because I was inspired by his painting, "San Giorgio Maggiore at Dusk." The painting shows a sunset in the sky and a reflection in the water. He used a vibrant red, orange, yellow, and blue. Across the water is a church in Venice, Italy. This was painted when he began losing his eyesight. This painting gave me an idea to make something similar to it. |
The Process
First Step
Before I started painting I grabbed the colors I was planning to use for the sky. The colors I used for the sky was dark blue, red, orange, and yellow. I started with painting the a row dark blue then another row of red, then orange the lastly yellow. After that I begin blending the colors together on the top |
The 2nd Step After I finished the sky, I begin painting the city, I used black to paint the towers. I didn't have any creative ideas as to what kind of towers I wanted to do, I just did simple towers. I tried to be creative which is why some towers on the edge is curvy like this one that's shown in the picture. this part was put in the center row of the canvas because I had an idea for the bottom of the canvas. |
The Final Step
After painting the towers. I did the same thing to the bottom but as a reflection. The bottom part of the canvas is supposed to be a lake reflecting from the both the towers and sunset sky. I used the same color materials from before and the next row under the black towers I used yellow for that row then orange, then red and dark blue then I blended them all together and after letting it dry, I used a little bit of black for the towers but not cover the whole tower with black so it can look like it was reflecting in the water. |
Reflection
This Project was fun and wasn't so challenging to do, of course like any project, I had a few difficulties to do like the dark blue and the red, I was having a hard time blending it together so I left it alone and its one of the things I don't like about the painting because on how it looks. Another example is the some of the towers look, I don't like that some of the curvy towers. What I do like about the project is the red, orange and yellow all blended so well into an amazing sunset sky. What I would've done differently was the buildings, I should've done was blend the red and dark blue better. |
Compare & Contrast
Similarities
Balance: The paintings have a similar balance is the same thing because both buildings are centered in the middle of the paintings. Theme: Both painting have a similar theme which is a sunset in Colors: Though not all of it has the same colors, there are still some colors that are the same such as red, orange, black, and yellow. Differences Movement: The movement is different from each other because my painting doesn't use impressionist while Monet does. Other then the time of day these painting shows, what's different about these two is that of the buildings. My buildings are high up while "View of Delft" buildings are low. They layout is different, View of Delft you can see the details in the buildings while my painting the buildings are just covered in all black. |
