Title: A Flying Trip
Size: Medium: Cardboard & Paperboard Completion: February 2021 Exhibition Text My Hybrid Heroes is based off owls, this is related to myself because species like birds or Hawks have wings to go anywhere around the world without worrying about anything. Although Humans can go almost anywhere, species that can fly like owls don't have to worry about the cost of it, they can just go wherever and whenever they want, they can be free which is what I want my project to represent. |
Different Cultures of Owls
Throughout history, Owls have been called in many cultures such as intelligent, wisdom, evil and more. Many Native American tribes typically consider owls a symbol of death by hearing an Owl hoot or screech which is a bad omen and that many tribes believes that men who practices bad and hurtful medicine could shape-shift into animals, often being owls.

Yoshiyuki Oyama For my inspiration I chose is Yoshiyuki Oyama, he is a game designer that works for General Manager and Producer at Nintendo since the late 1990 but is best known for his designs in The Legend of Zelda series. Oyama came up with the idea and designed the Ritos characters as well, with help from some of the crew including the art director Satoru Takizawa, the producer Hidemaro Fujibayashi and the director Eiji Aonuma but I chose Oyama because he was the one who came up with the idea of Ritos characters from both Zelda Wind Waker and Breath of the Wild, the design of the Ritos he created inspired me to make a similar work of creating my owl design especially the details of their wings. |
The Process
Reflection
This was a very challenging project, It was not easy cutting a straight line nor a circle cutting through cardboard which is mainly the reason why I used mainly paperboard for the wings and body. Not only that was challenging but it was difficult to come up with design ideas for the project, dealing with the size of the costume. I would accidentally burned my fingers multiple times from using that hot glue gun. Sometimes, whatever I would attach something together using the hot glue gun, the next day, it would detach itself which means I would have to using extra hot glue so it could stay together. Even though this was a frustrating and challenging project for me, it was a fun experience, the only thing I regret was the body part, I feel like I could've done more with it like cover up my legs and feet as well but I overall, I believe I did a good job then I thought I would.

ACT Response
Clearly explain how you are able to identify the cause- effect relationship between your inspiration and its effect on your artwork? I chose Oyama for my inspiration is because the designs on the Ritos mainly the outfit and wings inspired me to do what he done. What is the overall approach the author has regarding the topic of your inspiration? Because both the outfit and clothing Oyama made would've been tricky for me, I tried coming up with my own ideas but also having it be similar to owls and my inspiration's work. What is the central idea or theme around your inspirational research? The Central Idea or theme around my inspiration is flying because my main focus is about Owls and how they can fly anywhere and being free which would represent a positive work of mine. What kind of (conclusions reached on the basis of evidence and reasoning) did you make while reading your research? As I kept researching about Oyama, I learn more about not only just his work but himself and what inspired him to design the Ritos. |
